About Us

Resident Physician—tthe precursor to Resident & Staff Physician —published its first issue in September 1955. Originally focused exclusively on residents, the digest-sized journal published articles on career options and resident life. In response to the changing needs of residents over the past 50 years, the journal has made changes to its design, its editorial focus, and even its name. Despite these changes, our mission of educating physicians remains unchanged.

For instance, in its first issue, titles included: "The Doctor Speaks…Spanish," " Bellevue Hospital Center : First in a Series on Resident Centers," and "Dressed to Cure." There were also articles on locating a practice, investing, life insurance, and equipping a pediatric office. The clinical offerings were limited to picture quizzes (which we still publish today) and a case report and discussion series.

In that September 1955 issue, the first editor-in-chief, Dr. Perrin H. Long, wrote a statement of Policy and Purposes. He said this about residents:

"Because of their duties and the state of their pocketbooks, residents as a group lead restricted lives. They have relatively little opportunity to get about. Their contact with residents of other hospitals are infrequent. There are few with whom they can talk about their problems. There is no journal which deals exclusively with the interests of the resident. Resident Physician will fill that void."

In accordance with the changes in medicine, we've expanded our audience to include hospitalists and staff physicians and our editorial focus is much more clinical, but we are still filling that void.

Mission Statement

Resident & Staff Physician Resident & Staff Physician continues to be a source of continuing education for residents, their staff, fellows, and hospitalists. Our peer-reviewed articles and case reports cover the entire spectrum of hospital-related topics as well as a large variety of specialty topics, allowing readers to augment their medical school education and bedside knowledge and enhance their clinical experiences. The journal provides practical updates on current guidelines and new developments in medicine. Having been in publication since 1955, it continues to offer editorial focus that reflects contemporary medicine at its best.
